SEASIDE – Last Saturday I heard a fellow named Mallory Factor on Huckabee. What an unusual name! He wrote a book about indoctrination in schools entitled The Shadow Bosses. The real Malloryfactor was his subject matter. What on earth was his mother thinking? Although she has a great sense of humor. Maybe its a pseudonym.

At six oclock on that day, I went for a walk. It was my first exposure to the Hood-to-Coast crowd. Roosevelt Drive was full of inchers along mostly SUVs, lots of them sporting names and slogans. What a great day for the runners. The sunny weather may have been too warm, yet to me it was perfect. To make it really perfect, I would have liked to have stopped at the 12th Ave. Grocery for an ice cream bar. I also wanted to cross the sky bridge before it came down but didnt make that.
Celery, when it is in season, is one of my favorite vegetables. When it isnt, its no good unless every stalk has the strings removed. Otherwise, one can choke and turn blue. Not a pretty face.
Monday afternoon there was a memorial service for Robert Trumbull at the United Methodist Church. Bob died on Aug. 22, leaving his wife Catherine, and sons David, William, Walter, Jonathan and Robert. Many other relatives were present as each of his sons pay tribute in the church filled with flowers. A daughter-in-law, Denise, also spoke of her father-in-law, as he did his wife of 58 years, Cathy. Officiating at the inspirational service was Rev. Ron Crandall. Bobs son, Walter, who lives in Seaside, sang two numbers, Amazing Grace and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. Some of the audience joined in for Swing Low (coming to carry me home). Bobs youngest son Jonathan, played a native American flute which he had a haunting melody he played for his dad. He announced it when he began as whatever comes out.

The memorial was about two hours long a wonderful outpouring by the whole family of their love for a husband and father and how he affected each of them in their relationships. It was a great send off for Bob who is at peace after many illnesses.
During his last years he was busy until his latest surgery, (the amputation of a leg), at business ventures and as an honored member of our church. We rejoice that with his new body, he also has a new leg. Till we meet again.
We also said good-by to Margaret Gammon on Aug. 20. She was preceded in death by all her immediate family. Husband William and sons, Richard and Robert. Margaret and I were both in the service wives circle during World War II. She was 99 years old.
Of course Ive been watching the Republican National Convention from Tampa, intertwined with coverage from Hurricane Isaac. Its horrible what people in the south go through every year. I would be afraid to live in a place like that. As far as politics are concerned, we can hope for change.
Q: Why are ducks such lousy drivers?
A: They honk too much.
