Letter: Enormous

If you or I, or any of our relatives, neighbors and friends pursued a political career, it would take substantial amounts of cash to run a successful campaign. This is especially true at the federal level. Even at the state level, those amounts have become enormous.

And, the biggest donors are corporations. Whenever a legislator votes on a bill, they are forever looking over their shoulder to make sure they don’t offend their biggest donors. Does it come as any surprise that the average citizen feels as if the government does not adequately represent their interests first?

Benjamin Franklin was once asked, “Well, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” He replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” I hope we can.
