Letter: Troubling situation

As we approach the Fourth of July, a holiday celebrating our nation’s foundation on the principle of self-government, a troubling situation unfolds in Cannon Beach. Our very right to vote on critical projects impacting our community seems to be eroding.

The recent actions by the city manager and a compliant City Council raise serious concerns. By maneuvering around a public vote, five individuals are making decisions with far-reaching consequences.

A proposed $33.6 million debt burden, spread across three projects, represents a significant commitment for our town. While some projects may be necessary, the scale and cost of others warrant public scrutiny and a chance for residents to voice their opinions through a ballot measure.

Is this the legacy we want to inherit from our forefathers who fought for the vote of the people? Cannon Beach deserves better. We, the residents, should have a say in decisions that will shape the future of our community and its finances.

Let us uphold the spirit of Independence Day and demand a transparent and democratic process where the voices of the people are heard, and let’s keep “Cannon Beach Together.”

Thank you for listening!
