In One Ear: Sea lion coffee?

Ruse rerun: ‘Tis the time for April Fools’ Day pranks. Patricia Staton Thomas sent in a little tidbit from Micha Cameron-Lattek, one of the owners of Street 14 Café in Astoria, who sent out a bulletin proclaiming that a “very limited edition” of local sea lion coffee would be available, starting April 1.

The coffee is inspired by Kopi Luwak Co. coffee, whose “coffee beans are selected by the original coffee connoisseur, the Asian Palm Civet,” its website says. “They love to eat only the very ripest, tastiest coffee beans. These beans then pass through whole, and are collected, thoroughly cleaned.”

In other words: The coffee is made from civet-pooped coffee beans. Street 14 Café offered a “local North Coast twist on this delicacy.” How? By adding “some of the finest coffee cherries to (the sea lions’) fishy diet,” of course, and then collecting the resulting pinniped poop for processing.

“We invite you to try this delicacy,” Micha added, “black with no sugar or milk added.” Yikes. (In One Ear, 4/11/2014) (Photo: Jean Beaufort)
