Read the old papers in your PJs

Last week the Ear reported how the University of Oregon is DIGITIZING OLD ISSUES OF THE DAILY ASTORIAN. Well, now comes the fun part: reading the nice new-looking clear and crisp newspapers. You can plop yourself in front of the computer in your pajamas and read an 1883 (or later) issue of The Daily Morning Astorian online here: http://tinyurl.com/digimorn

The Ear was especially intrigued by the ads. From Nov. 18, 1883, for Hostetters Celebrated Stomach Bitters: There has never been an instance in which this sterling invigorant and anti-febrile medicine has failed to ward off the complaint, when taken daily as a protection against malaria. Malaria? If you suffer from dyspepsia and liver complaints, Shilohs Vitalizer is guaranteed to cure you. If if doesnt kill you first.

The Cosmopolitan Chop House and Restaurant, open day and night, promises meals for 25 cents and upwards. Not to be outdone, Edward Youngs Restaurant and Chop House patrons will find the tables supplied with 10 or 12 of the best newspapers. Including The Daily Morning Astorian, no doubt.
