Seaside boys overcame tough hole locations Tuesday at Alderbrook Golf Course to edge Cowapa League rival Tillamook High School 354-357.
The victory moved the Seagulls to the doorstep of another Cowapa League title. A match against Scappoose on April 24th will determine which team wins the league.
The Seagulls and Indians tied for the title last season and have combined to win 14 out of the 15 Cowapa titles in which they were both members.
Junior Xanh Quang led the way for Seaside with an 86. Madden Wunderlich followed close behind with an 88, while Logan Norman and Alex Arden scored a 90. Landon Nofield was Seaside’s fifth player with a score of 98. Tillamook’s Triston Faber took home the first place honors with an 84.
Seagulls head coach Jim Poetsch hopes his team can use the match as a way to improve.
“We played some terrible golf today, but hopefully we can grow from this,” Poetsch said in a statement. “They had some impossible pin locations, from a tournament they had this weekend, so scoring was going to be difficult. But we were not mentally strong enough to overcome that and still post decent rounds.
“Skill-wise we are as good as anyone, but today showed that we need to work on our mental toughness so that we can still score when things don’t go our way. I think we got down on ourselves and started to question our abilities. We have a few weeks to turn that attitude around to where we only concentrate on the next shot and not on what has already transpired. If we can do that, with our skill level, there aren’t a whole lot of teams that have the ability to beat us.”
Next up for Seaside is the 64th Seaside Invitational at Astoria Golf and Country Club. The Seagulls will take on a field of 14 teams ranging from 3A-6A. First groups are expected to tee off at 11 a.m Monday.
