Around the diamonds: Astoria softball wins three games

Astoria softball looked to keep its winning streak going, and local baseball teams started league play.

Astoria softball stays hot
Six is now the number for Astoria softball.
After three victories this past week, the Fishermen improved to 8-2-1 on the season and moved up to No. 2 in the 4A Oregon School Activities Association rankings. An 8-0 victory over Molalla on Wednesday started the week. Then the Fishermen defeated Tillamook 22-9 on Thursday, and then finished up the week with a 2-1 victory over The Dalles on Friday afternoon.
Lyla Carlson went 2-3 and knocked in both of the runs, while Taryen Wray and Maddie Wilkin combined to give up just one run over seven innings in the Fishermen’s victory.
Next up for Astoria is a Tuesday home game against Seaside, then the first of three games against Cowapa League rival Scappoose on Thursday. The game against Seaside starts at 4 p.m., and Thursday’s contest against Scappoose is at 5 p.m.

Warrenton softball doomed by home runs
Warrenton traveled to Clatskanie for a rematch. After falling to the Tigers 12-11 in their first matchup, the Warriors wrapped up their nonleague schedule with a 2-1 loss.
Just like the first game, the two teams were separated by just one run after seven innings. Clatskanie pitcher Joey Sizemore and Warrenton freshman Scarlet Anderson went head-to-head in a pitchers duel. Sizemore struck out 13 hitters, while Anderson struck out seven and allowed just seven base runners. The only blemish for Anderson was two home runs by Clatskanie hitters Olivia George and Karielle Carlson.
Warrenton wrapped up the nonleague portion of its schedule with a record of 1-7-1. The Warriors are set to start league play with a game against Rainier High School on Tuesday. The home game will be at 4:30 p.m.

Rainier outscores Knappa
Knappa softball got outhit Friday against Rainier.
The teams combined to score 27 runs and had 27 hits. Knappa had five players with two or more hits, but Rainier scored at least one run in every inning to hold on for a 15-12 victory.
Mylie Lempea, Lily Simpson and Malia Lauderbaugh had three hits for the Loggers, while Maddy Bailey and Georgia Sutton had two.
With the loss, Knappa finished up its nonleague schedule with a 6-3 record and a No. 8 ranking in the OSAA 2A standings. The Loggers are set to begin league play with a three-game series against Gaston, which is set to begin on Tuesday at Knappa High School. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Warrenton baseball off to fast start
The title defense for Warrenton has hit no hurdles thus far.
The Warriors went 3-0 for the first week of league play with victories over Corbett, Catlin Gabel and Westside Christian.
Two out of the three wins saw Warrenton score 12 or more runs. On Wednesday, the Warriors beat Corbett 7-1. The Warriors took advantage of wild pitching from Catlin Gabel to win 18-2 on Friday. Then behind a seven-run first inning the Warriors dispatched Westside Christian on Saturday 14-3.

Astoria boys drop first league game
Behind Kevin Hurliman and hot bats, the Cheesemakers of Tillamook beat Astoria 8-2 in Cowapa League play.
Hurliman allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in 5.1 innings while the Cheesemakers totaled 12 hits and eight runs. Astoria had just three hits and made three errors to drop the opening game of league play.
With the loss, Astoria dropped to 3-7 on the season and will look to snap its four-game losing streak against Seaside on Tuesday. The first of three matchups is set to begin at 5 p.m.

Seaside boys fall to Estacada and Scappoose
Seaside boys will also be looking to use the Clatsop Clash to get back in the win column after dropping two games against Estacada and Scappoose.
The Seagulls fell 14-3 to Estacada on Thursday before opening up league play with 10-3 loss to Scappoose. With the two losses, Seaside falls to 4-7 on the year.

Knappa boys wrap up nonleague schedule
Knappa baseball finished the nonleague portion of its schedule with a 4-2 record and No. 3 ranking in the 2A OSAA standings.
After a close win against Naselle High School of Washington on Wednesday, the Loggers took care of Country Christian/ North Clackamas Christian on Friday afternoon.
Pitcher Lukas Masters allowed just one hit in six innings while striking out nine batters. Gavin Barendse led the offense with a 3-3 day at the plate.
The Loggers are set to start league play with a three game series against Gaston on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
