Basketball: Warrenton boys split two, Seaside boys win again

Ryan Palmer, center, celebrates after his three-point play gave Warrenton a 61-60 victory Saturday over Neah-Kah-Nie.

Warrenton boys fell in their bid for a league title, the Astoria girls suffered a stunning loss, the Seaside boys continued to roll and the Knappa girls lost a close game to a 3A foe in a busy weekend for Clatsop County basketball teams.

Warrenton’s split

The Warrenton boys beat Neah-Kah-Nie 61-60 on Friday as Ryan Palmer converted a three-point play to give the Warriors the win at home.

After going up by seven points late in the fourth quarter, the Warriors got sloppy and lost the lead, but were saved by Palmer’s game-winning play. He was open under the basket and hit the game-tying bucket, drawing a foul in the process. He proceeded to hit the game-winning free throw.

The Warriors returned to the court on Saturday to host Corbett High School in front of a packed house for Warrenton’s senior night.

But the Warriors and Cardinals played a sloppy game, and Warrenton lost, 44-40.

Warrenton players were in foul trouble throughout the game, and lost Talon McGrorty to an injury after he was yanked down by a Corbett player from behind in the third quarter. In addition, the Warriors suffered a poor shooting night from the free-throw line.

The loss knocked Warrenton to 6-3 in league (13-8 overall), and squelched any hope the Warriors had of winning the Coastal Range League title. Even if the Warriors win their remaining three games in the regular season, they would still be one game behind Banks in the league standings.

Astoria girls stunned

The Astoria girls had their five-game winning streak snapped in a 48-46 loss Saturday at St. Helens.

When the teams first met on Jan. 14, the Lions scored just 17 points and the Fishermen won by 27. But on Saturday, they had one of those games where it seemed they couldn’t miss.

The loss knocked the Fishermen to third place in the Cowapa League standings, with a 3-2 league record, 9-8 overall. Seaside, with a 4-1 league mark, is in first place and St. Helens sits in second after Saturday’s win, with a 4-2 league record.

Seaside boys roll

The Seaside boys took control of a close game in the second half to roll to a 51-36 win Saturday at Tillamook, the team’s seventh straight victory. The Seagulls are 6-1 in Cowapa League play, 11-8 overall. The team is just a half-game behind league-leading Scappoose, which is 7-1 in league play.

Knappa falls short

Knappa girls basketball hosted 3A Oregon Episcopal on Saturday evening in a nonleague game, but fell 39-35. The Loggers remain tied with Clatskanie for first in the 2A Northwest League with a 10-1 league mark (16-6 overall). The Loggers host Clatskanie in a league showdown Tuesday at 6 p.m.
