Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Jinx Mustard Culver-Reeves passed away Dec. 5 in Astoria at age 72. Jinx bravely fought her third round of cancer while living with her husband of 30 years, Al Reeves, in the care of Clatsop Retirement Village.
Jinx was born to Tamplet (Jim) and Rae Mustard in Seattle. Her father passed away when she was very young, however she was surrounded with a large, loving family, including siblings, Cherry Keen, Chuck Mustard, Tammy Bear and Joni Denton, whom she remained very close with throughout her life.

She and her siblings were later blessed with an incredible stepfather, Robert (Bob) Martin, whom she adored.
Jinx was raised and educated in Astoria, where she married Harold Culver. They raised their children, Shanon Sporseen and Jolene Ogborn, in the house the family built together. Jinx shared the home in a way that it became a central safe haven for many visitors.
Those who visited the family knew they would be received with a big loving smile, welcomed to a meal, an ear or safe shelter. She cared for and loved many extra children, while their families were going through tough phases, with nothing but understanding and empathy. Her loyal love ran so deep that friends truly felt like family.
During this time, you could find Jinx dancing in the kitchen or making one laugh with her goofiness. Many remember her for being a great cook. Everyone looked forward to Friday night, taco nights, or her tireless efforts to make crepes for extra weekend kids, using her trusty cast iron pan.
Jinx was a dance instructor specializing in western couples/line dancing and was a member of Western Dance Associates. She proudly introduced western dance and helped with several successful dance camps. She developed lifelong friendships through her involvement with the association.
Throughout life, Jinx was happiest outdoors, but was also passionate about sewing. She would humbly tell you she wasn’t a seamstress, but those who would receive her creative gifts of love would argue otherwise.
Jinx is survived by her husband, Al Reeves; daughters, Shanon (Stan) Sporseen and Jolene (Frank) Ogborn; and grandchildren, Kody, Brett, Mackenzie and Wyatt.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tamplet and Rae Mustard; stepfather, Robert (Bob) Martin; and sibling, Gail Mustard.
The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to the Clatsop Retirement Village staff and Lower Columbia Hospice for the heartfelt care they provided her during her final battle.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that in remembrance of Jinx’s caring nature and love of those in need, please pay it forward or donate cash or by check made payable to: Oregon Department of Human Services — Clatsop Donated Funds, Attn: Sarah Dielman, 422 Gateway Ave. Suite 230, Astoria, OR., 97103. The funds will go toward children, youth and families impacted by the foster care system.
A celebration of life will be held in the summer; the date and time will be announced.
