A Utah man was arrested Wednesday after threatening a knife standoff with police.

A Port of Astoria officer called police at 10:45 p.m. about a man who was wanted on a warrant but said an arrest attempt would end in a standoff. Astoria police made contact with the man at West Marine Drive and Bay Street.

When asked to stop, Michael Douglas Hathaway, 37, allegedly refused and was concealing a dirk-style knife, which officers asked him repeatedly to drop. He allegedly took the knife out at one point and told officers they would have to shoot him to take him into custody.

After a few minutes of talking to police, Hathaway agreed to drop the knife and surrender. He was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria after allegedly telling police he had ingested heroin.

Hathaway was later taken to Clatsop County Jail and charged with unlawful use of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and felon in possession of a restricted weapon.
