Volleyball: Astoria battles at Southridge

BEAVERTON The Astoria volleyball team found itself in the toughest pool and ended up facing all 6A competition over the weekend, in the annual Southridge Tournament at Southridge High in Beaverton.

The Lady Fishermen opened with a 16-25, 26-27 loss to Southridge in their first match, despite holding leads of 14-6 and 23-20 in Game 2.

Astoria battled tough to close out pool play, but lost matches to West Salem (26-27, 20-25) and McMinnville (22-25, 15-25).

That put the Fishermen into the consolation bracket, where they defeated Tigard in three games, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9, before a 21-25, 20-25 loss to McMinnville.

In the win over Tigard, Astorias Kyra Grafton had nine kills, and Chloee Hunt added five kills with a block and an ace.

Allison Silva chipped in with four aces and 20 assists, Christan Carter had three kills and three aces, and Victoria Kee had two kills with three aces.

Against McMinnville, Grafton posted eight kills, Hunt added five kills with two blocks, Carter had four kills, and Silva recorded 15 assists.

We played all 11 (players) during pool play, and I was pleased with our overall effort, said Astoria coach Angee Hunt. It was a huge plus that for the most part we adapted to the lineup changes, and worked together to compete.

In pool play, Chloee Hunt had 14 kills and three blocks, and Grafton finished with 10 kills and a block. Noelle Lund and Carter each had three aces and two kills, Lili Meiffren had three kills and Silva recorded 29 assists.

In other weekend tournament action, Newport defeated Seaside 25-21, 25-18 in the Cascade Tournament.

At Neah-Kah-Nie, Warrenton swept the Pirates (25-21, 25-22) but lost to Delphian (17-25, 13-25).
