Pauline Virginia Mason

Astoria resident, 85Pauline Virginia Mason, 85, of Astoria, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in Astoria.

Mrs. Mason was born March 7, 1917, in Pittsburgh, to Thomas and Pauline Morgan Hughes.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1937, she married James Mason. He survives, residing in Astoria.

In her teens, Mrs. Mason moved to San Diego and attended San Diego State College, where she was a classmate of Gregory Peck. In 1954, she moved to Petaluma, Calif., but later returned to San Diego.

In her 60s, she biked throughout Europe. Family members say she was always interested in new things, wove tapestries, upholstered furniture and liked the group Credence Clearwater Revival.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, James H. Jr. and Sharon Mason of Petaluma, David and Diane Mason of Clayton, Calif., and Peter and Lori Mason of Astoria; three daughters, Sheila Mason and her partner Christine Mackey of South Pasadena, Calif., Virginia Mason of Placerville, Calif., and Nora Mason of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Mason Teague, Katherine, David, Michael, Venice, Justin, Sarah and Emily Mason, Patrick and Robert Mackey-Mason, and Jennifer Schladweiler; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A brother, James Hughes, a grandson, Kenneth Mason, and a great-grandson, Evan Mason, all died earlier.

Private memorial will be held later and her ashes scattered in La Jolla Cove, San Diego.
