Everyday People: Astoria Golf & Country Club manager sees potential of golf to bring people together

Christina Dalton has been around golf much of her life.

The general manager for Astoria Golf & Country Club started playing in high school and has been in the golf industry for 27 years.

Before taking on the leadership role at the country club in 2023, she spent a decade at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains as director of sales and assistant general manager.

“We have to honor the legacy of what this club did for its first 100 years and think about what we can do now to provide for the next generation down the line,” Dalton said. “There’s a lot the club has to offer, so looking ahead is important.”

Dalton, who enjoys golfing with people from the community and her two children, ages 9 and 11, said the sport is something that can bring people from different backgrounds together.

“There’s always community members who stop by my office and ask to play a round,” she said. “Some days there might be a retired CEO, a lawyer, a teacher and a garbageman in the same foursome, which is unique. That’s something other clubs closer to Portland or Vancouver don’t have, so people who live closer to those areas enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the coast.”

Since moving to Oregon 12 years ago from Ventura, California, Dalton spent time in Beaverton and Carlton before moving to the North Coast 18 months ago. Living in Carlton provided Dalton with the small-town feel she now enjoys, while the coast allows Dalton to see her neighbors at the grocery store and a much more laid-back atmosphere than a bigger beach city.

Dalton’s goal as general manager is to bring more people out to the country club in Warrenton. She believes a lot of locals don’t know about the club or think it’s out of their reach. The country club is hosting the annual Oregon Coast Invitational in July, along with a children’s day on July 24, which Dalton hopes will help attract new members.

As a new resident of the Oregon Coast, Dalton said her plan is to enjoy the various activities in the region with her children.

“They like being out on the driving range and being outside,” she said. “We do a lot of beach days, spend a lot of time at Fort Stevens and experience all the new stuff we haven’t done yet since there seems to be new summer events popping up every day.”
