“Astoria by Arrow” is Grant McOmie’s latest adventure. McOmie, of KGW’s, “Grant’s Getaways,” took a ride on the historic restored river pilot boat Arrow No. 2, which is now a working craft of a different sort — it’s a sight-seeing boat owned by Mark and Jeanette Schacher, which provides a three-hour tour of the Astoria waterfront.
“I’ve run across hundreds of people who’ve lived in Astoria their whole lives and never seen Astoria from the river,” Mark Schacher, a retired tug and barge deckhand, told McOmie. “We offer visitors the chance to travel the Astoria waterfront, where I interpret everything they see and many things you can no longer see! It’s historic interpretation of Astoria’s riverfront history.”
“There seems to be something for everyone,” Jeanette Schacher added, including crabbing.
“It is easy to take in the picturesque aspects of Astoria,” McOmie said, “featuring houses built into the hillside overlooking a vibrant and thriving riverfront of transformed former canneries and sawmills turned breweries, restaurants and boutique lodging.” (Photo: Arrow Tugboat & Tour Co.)
