After months out of operation, one of two National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather buoys at the mouth of the Columbia River has been repaired.
NOAA announced Monday that the National Data Buoy Center, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, had serviced weather buoy 46029, restoring marine observations.
The buoys at the mouth of the river track real-time data on barometric pressure, wind direction, speed and gust, air and sea temperature, humidity and waves, helping inform National Weather Service forecasts and providing lifesaving warnings for ship captains, fishermen and others.
Station 46029 became inoperable last November. Just a few days later, station 46089 also went out, leaving no functioning NOAA buoys at the mouth of the river. According to the National Data Buoy Center’s service schedule, station 46089 is scheduled for deployment in October.
