Letter: Astoria ambassadors

Clatsop Cruise Hosts is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, and has been providing assistance to guests to Astoria for almost 25 years. However, due to a decrease in the number of volunteers, the hosts are currently unable to meet visitors many times at the 17 Street Dock at the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Likewise, it is often difficult to fill all volunteer spots in town.
The decline in volunteer numbers has made it difficult for the hosts to address the numerous questions from ship passengers about Astoria’s history, local dining options, finding a pharmacy, directing passengers to the Astoria Riverfront Trolley and more. Moreover, the hosts are facing financial challenges due to the impact of COVID-19 and unexpected increases in bus chartering fees.
Initially, the Sunset Empire Transportation District was CCH’s transportation provider from the Port of Astoria to the downtown area. However, due to COVID and other unforeseen circumstances, that is no longer the case. Transportation costs, even after raising the bus ticket price substantially, have increased dramatically, resulting in the expenses depleting reserves.
If you would like to volunteer to become a Clatsop Cruise Host, or donate to support these “Astoria ambassadors,” please visit the website at clatsopcruisehosts.org to either volunteer or donate.
