- Helen and Blaine Mack
Palm Desert, California
1927 — 2024
Helen Mack, age 97, died at home on April 17, with Blaine, her husband of nearly 74 years, at her side.
A native of Astoria, Helen was the third of seven children, and the eldest daughter, born to Frank and Hilja (Eskola) Fransen.
Helen married Blaine on June 10, 1950, in Astoria. They made their first home in Siletz, and later lived in numerous states around the country after Blaine was called up for U.S. Air Force active duty in Korea.
Helen was the proud mother of their three children, David, Nancy and Kristina.
Following Blaine’s retirement from the Air Force, they moved to Klamath Falls, and later Palm Desert, California. They spent their summers at their home in Cannon Beach, close to family and childhood friends.
Always proud of her Finnish heritage, Helen maintained close relationships with her siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews. She loved to go for walks, particularly with their beloved dog, Portia.
She also loved to participate in exercise classes, attend events at the Palm Springs Air Museum, listen to Blaine’s singing groups and read up on Pacific Northwest history.
Helen was known throughout her life for her baking prowess, and loved making special treats for her family and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her three brothers and three sisters.
She is survived, and missed by, her three children, David Mack, Nancy (Roger) Hootman and Kristina Mack, and granddaughter, Amanda Hootman. Blaine died five weeks to the day after her. Helen is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, who remember her warmth and generosity.
A celebration of life was held for Helen and Blaine on Nov. 8 at the Palm Springs Air Museum.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions to the air museum or to the Clatsop County Historical Society.
