SOU, McGrorty rush closer to home

Dusty McGrorty will be playing a little closer to home this weekend when the Southern Oregon University football team pays a visit to McMinnville Saturday to take on the Linfield Wildcats.
Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in McMinnville. General admission tickets are $5. The game will be broadcast live over the Internet at www.sou.edu/athletics, and will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by Action Sports Cable Network at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The Raiders are ranked second in the nation in the latest NAIA top 25 poll, their highest ranking ever.
McGrorty, the Warrenton High School graduate, racked up 262 all-purpose yards in a win over Humboldt State last week, including 155 yards on 26 rush attempts, his 13th career 100-yard game at the collegiate level.
He opened the game with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Only a junior, McGrorty moved into third place on SOU’s career list with 459 carries, and he is just 174 yards away from former All-American Casey Jackson and second-place on the school’s all-time yardage list (2,307).
With 42 career touchdowns, McGrorty is 18 away from equaling three-time All-American Griff Yates’ school and regional record.
The Raiders, meanwhile, are winners of seven consecutive regular-season home games and two straight on the road.
Linfield, which owns college football’s longest consecutive winning season streak (46), has won seven straight games dating back to week four of the 2001 season.
Although SOU posted a 29-0 shutout over Linfield in Ashland last year, history has not been kind to the Raiders in Yamhill County, based on SOU’s 3-17 record at Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, have never lost to SOU in consecutive years since the series started in 1934.
Southern Oregon moved up two spots to No. 2 in this week’s NAIA top-25 poll, behind No. 1-ranked Sioux Falls (S.D.).
The Raiders are on an extended road trip, as the team will travel a grand total of 5,592 miles to play road games at Linfield, Humboldt State, Rocky Mountain and Montana State-Northern before returning home for an Oct. 19 homecoming tilt against Azusa Pacific.
Anderson finishes 11thSeaside graduate Adrian Anderson, a sophomore cross country runner at Boston College, took 11th place in a recent meet in New Hampshire.
Shawn Wallace placed first to lead the Boston College men’s team to a second place finish.
Anderson was the third runner to finish for the Eagles, placing 11th in 26 minutes 40 seconds.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11, when the Eagles travel to the Bronx, N.Y., to run in the Iona Meet of Champions.
