The event emerged in the year 2000 as a way to continue to celebrate Seaside and the beach after the peak of the summer season.
A free sand sculpture workshop taught by Bert Adams is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Turnaround today, followed by solo and team sculpture competitions 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
A highlight of the event will be the solo masters division, in which experts create sand-sational works over the course of the weekend.

The festival also includes plans for a Christmas scene created by sand-sculpting team Hard Sand Cafe, with which visitors can have photographs taken for the holidays.
Registration in an array of categories will precede the competition Saturday morning.
More information, including a detailed list of events and competition rules, is available by contacting the Chamber of Commerce at www.seasidechamber.com or at (800) 444-6740.
