Harebrained rerun: Recently an aptly named video by Alex Derbyshire, “Stupid Boaters,” appeared on YouTube. It was taken on the Columbia River near Longview, Washington, of the bulk carrier Yasmine heading out to sea, chugging perilously close by a thicket of sports fishermen in their small boats. A screenshot is shown.

The rapid approach of the hulking Yasmine, which is 590 feet long, 98 feet wide, and cruises at between 10 and 12 knots, didn’t give the fishermen even a flicker of concern. The frustrated captain blew the ship’s horn five times repeatedly in warning, interspersed with repeated long blasts, to no avail. Nobody moved.

Comedian Ron White nailed it with the phrase, “you can’t fix stupid.” (In One Ear, 8/30/2013)
