Letter: Stand up for constitutional due process

The two most important words in America today: Due process.

If you pay attention to what is happening in this country under this current Republican administration, it is obvious that we no longer have that most essential guarantee of freedom that is specifically spelled out in the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

People are being snatched off the street and out of their homes, and literally made to disappear without due process!

It is important that everyone understands that this issue goes far beyond the immigration debate. Due process is not selective. It is a concept that does not and should not allow the government to pick and choose who receives it. In a free nation, either everyone is afforded due process, or there is no freedom for anyone. There is no gray area, no “but” or “what if?”.

This is an issue that is fundamental to American freedom, and you must care! This whole nation should be up in arms opposing this egregiously dictatorial behavior from our government. Sadly, we pretty much have business as usual instead.

Depriving anyone in this country of due process — anyone! — is the polar opposite of making America great. Instead, actions like this are turning us into a mirror image of early 1940s Germany.

Regardless of your race, religion, or political beliefs, you are a fool if you are not asking yourself — am I next?
