The Astoria School District Board of Directors recognized Clatsop Economic Development Resources and its executive director, Kevin Leahy, at its regular board meeting Nov. 18.

The school district and CEDR have built collaborative partnerships for over the past five years. Last spring, CEDR organized a Clatsop County Career Fair for high school juniors and seniors which targeted three areas for employers: hiring for immediate positions or summer jobs; finding committed and skilled employees to fill career technical trades, vocations and apprenticeship positions; and sharing career options in Clatsop County for college-bound students both at CCC and four-year colleges and universities. The fair included over 63 businesses from the county, and provided 32 summer jobs for area high school students.

CEDR has also been a strong partner with the school district in leveraging resources to meet the academic and vocational needs of students within the school system. CEDR was one of 18 partners in supporting a Career Technical Education Grant application to the Oregon Department of Education Career and Technical program.

Clatsop County’s five school districts and Clatsop Community College formed a consortium and applied for the grant in partnership with Hampton Affiliates. The grant would help buy high-tech equipment such as 3D printers, virtual welding trainers and teacher training to instruct students in modern-day trades.

CEDR is a private organization, associated with the college, that provides a variety of economic development services to businesses in Clatsop County. It receives funding from public and private organizations to provide entrepreneurs and business owners with resources to improve their businesses.
