As a cabbie, Scott Lyon said people always asked him to take them to the local souvenir shop. The only problem:?Lyon didnt know of any store of that type.
The minor annoyance led him and wife Carrie Lyon, who was working in insurance, to open The Trails End Souvenirs and Gifts Feb. 1 at 1365 Commercial St., next to Thiels Music.
We are trying to honor made in Astoria as much as possible, said Scott Lyon.
At the front of the shop is a world map with pins marking the homes of new customers. The couple thought of the idea because of the cruise ship passengers coming from all over the world to Astoria. So far, they have one couple from another country, Jennifer and Micha Lattek, who recently moved to Astoria from Berlin to run the nearby Street 14 Coffee.
Their shop has all manner of Astoria-bedecked merchandise, from shot glasses and coffee cups to Goonies t-shirts and photographs. The Trails End also works with local artists to offer a widerange of paintings, photos and textile items representative of the areas artistic endeavors.
The store, currently in its winter hours, stays open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closes Sunday and Monday. Starting March 1, it changes to summer hours, staying open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, although the couple will accommodate changes.
If we have a cruise ship coming in at 9 a.m. on a Sunday, well be open,?said Carrie Lyon.
Submissions of art to the store work on a consignment system. For more information, call 503-741-3550.
