The yearly event is a sure sign of winter on the North Coast, as the Astoria Fishermen hosted their annual meet Saturday at the Astoria Aquatic Center.
And the Seaside boys broke the ice (not literally) by walking away with what should be the first of many first-place trophies this year.
The Gulls racked up 117 points to finish ahead of Rainier (90), Tillamook (68) and Astoria (31).

Tillamook won the girls team title with 97 points, clipping Seaside (95) in the final event of the day.
Coaches for both Astoria and the Gulls were calling the day a success.
Awesome, said first-year Seaside coach Alex Reed. A little better than what I expected. I was very happy.
Despite smaller numbers in the pool, Astoria coach Amy Emmett said We were happy with the time drops we had and just how we did in general. We had time drops all over the place. Just about everybody swam their best times.
School records usually dont come until the end of the season not from a swimmer in the first meet of her sophomore year.
But thats what Astorias Taylor Christie accomplished Saturday at the Aquatic Center.
The sophomores dream of breaking a high school record came true not once, but twice.
In her first individual event of the day, Christie won the 200-yard individual medley in a school record 2 minutes, 23.50 seconds.
She came back later and recorded a 5:42.17 to win the 500-yard freestyle. The time was a school record, and nearly 34 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Shes putting it all together, Emmett said of Christie. Im kind of thinking (school records) all might fall. Shes a pretty well-rounded, all-around swimmer.
The most impressive team was Seasides boys squad, which won six of the 11 events.
Dylan Townsend in the 50 free, Christian Anderson in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, David Ward in the 100 breaststroke our boys are very deep all around, Reed said. I give a lot of credit to everybody. We won two relays, got third in another, and were missing one of our better swimmers. So I was really impressed with our boys depth.
The Gulls did not post any school records, but we do have some kids who will be setting some school records by the end of the season, Reed said with a wink.
Other winners for Astoria included Megan Sparks in the 200-yard freestyle and Nick Janda in the 500 freestyle, while Seasides Tennaya Carr (100-yard butterfly), Clarisse Coventry (100-yard freestyle) and Michaela Anderson (100-yard breaststroke) all had wins for the Lady Gulls.
The invitational is held every year at the Astoria Aquatic Center in honor of former Astoria swimmer Andrew Nygaard, who died following a workout in the fall of 1998.
