A supportive housing project in Uniontown is on track for completion following the Astoria Historic Landmarks Commission’s approval of design plans on Tuesday night.
Clatsop Behavioral Healthcare plans to construct a 33-unit housing development for low-income adults with mental health issues. The building, located on a vacant lot on W. Marine Drive between KFC and Motel 6, will also house the agency’s Open Door program, providing intensive treatment, support and employment services.
The three-story building will occupy approximately 23,000 square feet, with a commercial space on the first floor and multifamily units on the second and third floors.
In February, the Planning Commission voted to approve two variance requests for the project’s construction, allowing the project to bypass the requirement for a stepback and lessen the percentage of window coverage. In addition, the Planning Commission approved a request to vary from the 31 required off-street parking spaces to 16 spaces, since most residents will not need parking.
Amy Baker, the executive director of Clatsop Behavioral Healthcare, spoke on Tuesday and explained the organization’s desire to be a part of the solution on housing.
“We plan to support the heck out of the folks who are living there, and to create the kind of community that anybody would want to live in,” Baker said. “It’s been a pretty extensive design process designed to make really good use for two different programs within the building and to make spaces that are livable for residents, a space that somebody would want to live long term.”
