The Sellwood Bridge is still scheduled to reopen Thursday. But the county says if it can open it sooner, it will.

Multnomah County spokesman Mike Pullen says the move onto temporary supports was flawless. One indicator, he says, is that the bridge didn’t groan or make any noise.

“The engineers who were out there all day say they were just shocked that it didn’t creak,” Pullen says. “It was just completely silent on its journey north.”

Workers are now connecting the east and westside approaches to the detour bridge. They’re also paving and doing the final lane striping.

Pullen says two days have been set aside for inspections, to make sure nothing was damaged during the move. But he says, the county knows traffic is tough. “If we can get the bridge open any earlier than Thursday morning, we definitely will do that to help out the commute traffic.”

Once the detour bridge is open, workers will start digging into the hillside along Highway 43 to widen the road and make space for a new junction.
