Long-time North Coast broadcaster and station director Cal Brady died Monday from liver and kidney failure.
Brady founded and owned Calcomm Stations Oregon, which operates Seaside’s KQCB 94.9 FM. Brady also hosted a weeknight radio program called “Night Train.”
Brady, who maintained residences in Astoria and Southern California, died in his Los Angeles-area home with his wife Jody Miller at his side after a brief illness.
Brady had been in and out of the hospital for about a month and “full-time for the past week,” according to Dennis Brodigan, who worked at KQCB with Brady.
Brodigan remembers Brady as a selfless, generous citizen of the North Coast.
“He had a real love for the community,” Brodigan said.
After the Great Coastal Gale of 2007, “he took it upon himself to get the station up and running,” Brodigan said. “He went out and bought a generator and provided information to the community when no one else could.”
John Chapman, Brady’s longtime radio partner and owner of Seaside’s KSWB 840 AM, which he purchased from Brady, connected with Brady over their shared love of broadcasting.
“The radio industry was something we both had a passion for,” Chapman said. “We were peas and carrots.”
Cal Brady grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., and he graduated from the Park School of Buffalo in 1970 before attending the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Conn. He was around 60 years of age.
“When you get to be our age, you don’t ask each other,” Brodigan said.
At Brady’s request, there will be no services.
