Letter: Right or rite

Government needs to get out of the marriage business and stick to civil unions for all people, regardless of gender issues. Separation of church and state mandates civil unions as a right of equals.
Marriage is a religious rite. It sanctifies the sexual union as a religious sacrament. You go to a temple, mosque, church or shaman for the hocus-pocus. Not a judge.
When the state assumes its rightful role as the issuer of civil unions exclusively, discrimination will assume its righteous place: Religion.
