WARRENTON – They came up short on the scoreboard, but at least the Seaside girls soccer team finished the regular season on a positive note Wednesday night, against a very good team from Oregon Episcopal School.
On Senior Night at the Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Association field, the Gulls played the Aardvarks to a scoreless tie in the first half before a pair of defensive letdowns allowed two OES goals in the second half.
“We followed up one of our worst games of the year (a 2-1 win at Rainier Tuesday), with our best effort of the year,” said Seaside coach Dave Rouse, whose team finishes the regular season with an 8-4-2 mark, 4-3-1 in league play.
OES improves to 6-0-2 in league, 7-4-2 overall.
The Gulls will now await the results of a few other games, including today’s match between Yamhill-Carlton and Rainier, to determine their first-round opponent in the district playoffs. Seaside could play as soon as Saturday.
A strong defensive effort kept the high-powered OES offense in check for most of Wednesday’s game, but the Gulls could only manage three shots on goal.
Clara Broderick and April Cockcroft both had first-half attempts, but Broderick’s shot was saved by OES keeper Saskia Ilcison, and Cockcroft’s free kick attempt sailed over the cross bar.
The Aardvarks scored on their first shot attempt in the second half, as Jenni VanderWeele managed to get her foot on a ball in a scramble in front of the Gulls’ goal, and scored into the lower left of the net, with less than two minutes gone in the second half.
With 27:58 remaining, OES junior Paige Brack fired away from straight on, 25 yards out, and scored for the 2-nil lead.
A shot on goal by Broderick with 13 minutes remaining was Seaside’s only attempt of the second half.
The Gulls were playing with a few injuries, but still had solid efforts from the sophomore trio of Stephanie Villegas, Linsey Johnson and Leigh Wells.
