Boys Basketball: Astoria 47, Estacada 46ESTACADA – The Astoria Fishermen played the irony game Tuesday night at Estacada.

After struggling for most of the season on their free throws, the Fishermen won the nonleague boys basketball game with a foul shot, as Jordan Poyer’s free throw with five seconds left gave Astoria a 47-46 win over the Rangers.

Astoria was 6-of-18 at the line, while the team that made its free throws – the Rangers (16-of-17) – missed a last-second shot to keep the Fishermen perfect on the season (3-0).

Poyer scored a career-high 27 points for Astoria, built a 10-point lead in the first half, trailed by four points late in the third quarter, then rallied for the win.

Poyer had 19 at halftime, then came up with a steal with less than 10 seconds left, was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws with five seconds remaining.

A 3-pointer by Hans Lund helped Astoria take a 16-8 lead in the first period.

The Rangers pulled into a brief 16-16 tie, before the Fishermen pulled away again, as Poyer topped his nine points in the first quarter with 10 in the second, including back-to-back fast-break baskets for a 28-18 advantage.

Estacada rallied behind Houston Webb to grab a 40-36 lead late in the third, but consecutive baskets by Poyer and Chris Meyer put Astoria back in front midway through the final quarter.

Ilwaco 57, Seaside 43ILWACO, Wash. – Ilwaco finished strong Tuesday night in a nonleague game with Seaside, which was feeling the effects of a long layoff.

The Fishermen made 14-of-19 free throws and picked up 22 points off the bench from Ryan Blake in a 57-43 win over the Gulls at Aase Gymnasium.

Blake also had eight rebounds, while Karl Oman scored eight points on 8-of-8 free throws.

“We were up by 15 and (the Gulls) cut it to two in the fourth quarter,” said Ilwaco coach Paul Jarrett. “Last year we would have crumpled and lost this game, but we hit our free throws and took care of the ball down the stretch.”

Matt Kaino scored 10 points and Jack Whealdon added nine for Ilwaco, while Chris Senick led Seaside with 14 points.

Warrenton 69, Clatskanie 55CLATSKANIE – The Warrenton Warriors picked up where they left off in league play last year, as did the Clatskanie Tigers.

The Tigers actually outscored Warrenton in the first, third and fourth quarters (49-45), but the Warriors reeled off a decisive 24-7 run in the second period to pull away.

Ryan Lampi had two 3-pointers during the run, and finished with a game-high 24 points, to go with five rebounds and five assists.

Kevin Moore added 13 points and eight boards, and Jordan Little pulled down nine rebounds for the Warriors.

Warrenton hit 12 free throws in the final period, 18-of-24 for the game.

Jesse Moreland scored 15, Steve Tadei added 14 and Gary Aho chipped in 12 for the Loggers, who led 35-18 at halftime.

“I thought Corbett outworked us and outhustled us – that team will cause some problems for people this year,” said Knappa coach Craig Cokley. “We just pressured the whole game, picked up a lot of points in transition and got a lot of second-shot opportunities.”

Country Christian 77, Jewell 36JEWELL – Jewell’s Ross Trottier scored 14 points and Matt Prendergast added seven, but Country Christian countered with Isaac McKinley (23 points) and Paul Carter (13 points), as the Cougars defeated the Jays 77-36.
