Daryl Lee Hughes

Fisherman, 47Daryl Lee Hughes, 47, of Chinook, Wash., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, in Ilwaco, Wash.

Mr. Hughes was born Feb. 21, 1955, in Ilwaco, to Trophy and Rhoda Timmen Hughes. His parents survive, residing in Chinook.

In 1976, he married Laura Pelas; they later separated. In 1990, he married Shari Gatens; she survives, residing in Chinook.

Mr. Hughes attended Ilwaco High School, then fished locally for herring, salmon and crab. In 1982, he bought into the Bristol Bay, Alaska fishery. In 2001, he and his wife Shari bought Columbia River Fish Factory in Chinook.

He was baptized into the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chinook, was a member of the Columbia River Crabbers Association and active with the Chinook Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, riding motorcycles, going to the movies and being with his children and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael T. Hughes of Chicago and Kevin L. Hughes of Chinook; a daughter, Alina C. Hughes of Chinook; a step-son, Tyler Pederson of Chinook; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Kathy Hughes of Chinook; a sister and brother-in-law, Jill and Gary Wirkkala of Ilwaco; two uncles and an aunt, Lee Timmen of Chinook and Jerry and Patti Lappin of Salina, Kan.; nieces and nephews, Gary Wirkkala of Ilwaco, Cari and Steve Herbertson of California, Lori Hughes, Matt Hughes, and Kelli and Rick Hughes-Schimelpfenig, all of Vancouver, Wash., and RayAnne Magnuson and Caitlin and Joel Nicolazzi, all of Cathlamet, Wash.; a great-nephew Bailey Garrett Herbertson of California; and numerous cousins.

Memorial is 2 p.m. Tuesday at The Peninsula Church Center, 5000 N Place, in Seaview, Wash., with a following reception.
