Diamondbacks add Bruney to 40-man roster

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Arizona Diamondbacks finalized their 40-man roster Nov. 20, adding nine players including Warrenton’s Brian Bruney, the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Also added to the roster were pitchers Casey Daigle, Mike Gosling, Brandon Medders and Phil Stockman; infielders Jerry Gil, Scott Hairston and Chad Tracy along with outfielder Josh Kroeger.

With the additions, the Diamondbacks roster stands at 39.

Winter Soccer tryouts heldThe Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Association (LCYSA) will be holding tryouts Dec. 7 for its Winter Classic Soccer teams.

Classic Soccer is an opportunity for boys and girls to play competitive teams from Portland and other areas of Oregon.

LCYSA’s goal is to form separate boys and girls teams at the U-16 and U-19 levels. The number and commitment of players will be the deciding factor.

The length of the season has changed, with games taking place between Feb. 7 and March 14. The season will end before school spring vacation dates.

Those interested in playing are to be at the Warrenton Soccer Complex (Ridge Road) between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Dec. 7. Players should attend and be dressed to play.

Football playoffs this weekThe OSAA football state championships continue this week with six games at three sites.

The 4A semifinalists meet in a doubleheader Friday at PGE Park in Portland. Clackamas faces Tigard at 5 p.m. followed by North Medford vs. Canby at 8 p.m.

State champions for Class 2A and 1A will be crowned Saturday, as Regis and Amity meet for the 2A trophy at Cottage Grove High School beginning at noon. Powder Valley and Powers play for the 1A title at Hillsboro Stadium. Kickoff is 3 p.m.

The 3A semifinals also are slated for Saturday: Junction City vs. Marist at 5 p.m. in Cottage Grove and Vale vs. Wilsonville at Hillsboro Stadium at noon.

Tickets, good for admission to both games at each site, are $8 for adults and $6 for students at PGE Park and $7 and $5 at Hillsboro Stadium and Cottage Grove High School. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. at PGE Park and at 11 a.m. in Hillsboro and Cottage Grove. There is a $3 parking fee at Hillsboro Stadium.

Women’s basketballThe Astoria Parks and Community Services Department will hold the organizational meeting for the 2004 Women’s Basketball Program at 6 p.m. Dec. 10, in the Astoria Parks Office, 1095 Duane.

The beginning of the league season will be determined at the meeting, as well as fees and how many games will be played.

Anyone interested in playing in the league is invited to attend. For more information, call the Parks Office at 325-7275.

VolleyballThe Astoria Parks and Community Services Department will hold the organizational meeting for the 2004 Winter Volleyball Program at 7 p.m. Dec. 10, in the City Hall Council Chambers, 1095 Duane.

The season, rules and officiating will be discussed at the meeting. All teams interested in participating need to attend. Anyone not on a team but wishing to play is also invited to attend the meeting.

Girls’ basketballThe Astoria Parks and Community Services Department will be conducting a basketball program for girls in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. To register, complete a registration form and return it to the Astoria Parks Office, 1095 Duane, by 5 p.m. Dec. 5.

There is a fee of $18 per child living inside the city and $20 per child living outside the city. The fee is charged to help meet program expenses. The registration fee this year includes the colored team shirts.

The program is offered in January, February and March. Practice will start in January, with games starting at the end of the month and running through March. Games are played 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and Saturdays.

Coaches determine what the practice schedule will be. The program stresses development of basic skills, and no score is kept during games.
