A fisherman is presumed dead Thursday after a line dragged him overboard.

Andrew Dennon, 20, of Seaside, was fishing for slime eel aboard the Royal Quarry, which is homeported in Hammond. He became tangled in a long line at about 7 a.m., 32 miles northwest of Ilwaco, Wash., said U.S. Coast Guard civillian employee Mark Dobney.

The crew reported seeing Dennon disappear below the surface in the fishing gear, said Petty Officer Kurt Fredrickson, Coast Guard spokesman. The crew immediately retrieved the line, but Dennon was no longer in the gear. Dennon was a poor swimmer and was not wearing a life jacket. He was wearing yellow rain gear.

The Coast Guard searched the area Thursday with an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, and two 47-foot motor life boats from Station Cape Disappointment, Wash.

The water temperature was 58 degrees, visibility was 100-yards because of heavy fog and seas of one-to-two-feet.
