Catch a film on a rainy day

The Rainy Day Film Festival kicks off its 2005 season with short films by Northwest filmmakers at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4 at the Coaster Theatre Playhouse in Cannon Beach. Admission is $3.

New filmmaker and local resident Corey Burnett presents his project, “Lost Circus.” Burnett just completed his Fine Arts degree in film from the University of Oregon. Local filmmaker Mick Alderman will show and discuss his documentary short, “Alan Bean: Artist, Explorer, Moonwalker.” Portland filmmaker Tom Olsen Jr. will show his DVD on Frank Woodfield, an Astoria photographer and resident best remembered for his Clatsop County postcards and outstanding local photography.

The theme for this year’s Rainy Day Film Festival is “Clashing World Views,” featuring “The Dresser,” “Fog of War,” “City of God,” “Babette’s Feast,” “The Motorcycle Diaries,” “Ray,” “Breathless,” “Iris,” “The Buena Vista Social Club,” “A Trip to Bountiful” and “Charlie Chaplin.” The festival is sponsored by Clatsop Community College English instructor Carol Knutson and her Intro to Film Studies students, along with Jeanine Fairchild and the Columbian Theater, Craig Shepherd and the Coaster Theatre Playhouse and CCC’s Arts and Ideas Program.

Films will be shown in DVD preview format at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Coaster Theatre and in full-screen format at 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Columbian Theater, 1102 Marine Drive in Astoria. Admission to all shows, including Tuesday’s kickoff party, is $3 per person.
