Alluring waterfalls beckon

The Pacific Northwest – including our backyard – is a great place to check out waterfalls, one of nature’s most inspiring features.

Youngs River FallsA packed trail leads down to the riverbed at the base of Youngs River Falls – a 65-foot pounding plummet into a pool surrounded by lush forest. It’s a popular spot for summer swimmers. Youngs River Falls was discovered by the Lewis and Clark expedition.

From Astoria, drive south across Youngs Bay on U.S. Highway 101 Business Loop to Miles Crossing. Turn left at the Youngs River Loop sign and continue to the sign to the falls.

Fishhawk FallsIn the summer, Fishhawk Falls is a winding swath of water that paints a reverse “S” across a steep rocky slope littered with drop-offs, stacked boulders and hidden grooves. Whitewater ribbons peel down the right side while clear strips of water wander down the other – each looking for the path of least resistance to the 40- to 60-foot waterfall. An easy path from a gravel parking lot leads to the base of the falls.

From Astoria, drive 24 miles along Oregon Highway 202 to Lee Wooden County Park.
