Larry Armand Wayrynen

Portland

Jan. 31, 1944 — Dec. 12, 2016

Larry Armand Wayrynen, a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, 72, of Astoria, Oregon, passed away at Oregon Health & Science University on Dec. 12, 2016.

He was born Jan. 31, 1944, in Longview, Washington, to Erma and Armand Wayrynen. He was loved by sister, Linda Sherwood, and brother, Arne Wayrynen. He graduated from Tillamook High School in 1962. Shortly after, he enlisted in the Navy. A veteran of the Vietnam War and a career military man, he served his country honorably and retired in 1989.

His love of the Pacific Ocean and his Finnish heritage brought him back to the Oregon Coast, where he settled as a long-term resident in Astoria. He was a member of the American Legion, the Moose, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He filled his retirement years with a love of music, movies and muscle cars.

He was a loving husband to Sussan Wayrynen of Astoria. He was a devoted father to Darin Wayrynen of Phoenix, Arizona, Eric Kearney of Paradise Valley, Arizona, Dana Spink (Marcus Spink) of Newport, Jennifer Cyrek of Forest Grove, Sarah Valarik (Doug Valarik) of Goodyear, Arizona, and Seth Cook of Astoria. He adored his grandchildren and loved spoiling them: Ally, Michael, Nicholas and Timothy Wayrynen and Jakob, Kolby and Brock Spink.

Larry’s memorial service was held at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, with a celebration of life that followed at Clatsop Post 12 American Legion in Astoria. He will be greatly missed for his stubborn charm and his generous nature.
