They’ve got talent

Here, in the Lower Columbia region, the Peninsula’s got talent. Recently I attended the newest Peninsula Association of Performing Artists production of “Once Upon A Mattress” during the final dress rehearsal, as it was given to those who live in assisted living centers.

It was a lovely evening, despite the July showers; we helped stroll and wheel individuals to their choice seating.  Angela Grote introduced the performance to the guests with charm and grace, making certain this select audience was aware of what they were about to experience.

The lights lowered. The music softly began. “Once Upon A Mattress” filled the theater with song and light-hearted humor for the next two hours, with a touch of amorousness for goodness’ sake. Princess Winnifred (Fred) was delightful with her nonchalant approach to life and love. The prince, Dauntless, gave up his boyhood for manhood in a moment of risk and revelation.

The queen … oh, the queen, like a monolith among minions, finds her ways aren’t always received or revered. The king, though silent throughout, shouts of manhood and mischief without a sound. The entire cast, comprised of youth and sage alike, come together for a delicious treat to the senses. Oh, yes, the peninsula’s got talent.

The story may be familiar, the setting may be frugal, the schedule may be frightful, but the colorful experience will get under your skin, and you will reflect on this fictional, fantastic story for years to come. Barbara Poulshock, an area treasure when it comes to the arts, has once again directed an ordinary group of people to produce extraordinary theater. We, as neighbors at the end-of-the-world, are fortunate to have this season of story and song in our own back yards.

I remember “Once Upon A Mattress” from the early years of television; while the music may not be so familiar to you, the message that simple can be special will ring true to your heart. I recommend you make plans to get your tickets, and to make your way to the Fort Columbia theater over the next several weeks, for one or more shows Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, and take in a musical, magical story that you will not soon forget.
