- Mark Jeffery, school superintendent in Warrenton, pointed to lower-income housing developments like Sunset Lake Resort & RV Park as part of why his school district has high rates of student homelessness.
WARRENTON — Things are looking up for the embattled Sunset Lake Resort & RV Park south of Warrenton.
Earlier this month, the park’s owner, Ken Hick, settled the case brought against his company, Resources Northwest Inc., by Clatsop County after a judge found the company had met occupancy restrictions. The state Department of Environmental Quality says Resources Northwest is also on schedule to replace its failing drain field by today’s deadline.
The park uses a recirculating gravel filter and soil-absorption drain field, which the state identified as failing a year ago. In April, Clatsop County Circuit Court Judge Cindee Matyas ordered the company to pump sewage from the failing system, reduce the wastewater being processed to 4,500 gallons a day and spread hydrated lime daily over the drain field as needed to disinfect the ground.
Gary Artman, an inspector with the state, said the company has been staying under the limits by pumping about 800 gallons of sewage a day. Meanwhile, the company has been installing a new bottomless sand filter, which Artman said will likely be complete within the state’s deadline.
In 2013, the county sued Hick to enforce a compliance order from 2011 limiting the park to 43 residential spaces, including 18 mobile homes, 25 RVs and an additional 38 spaces for visitors.
“The parties now agree that (Hick and Resources Northwest) are in substantial compliance with the terms of the settlement,” Matyas wrote in a judgment issued last month.
