Astoria Riverwalk rerouted after further collapse of Buoy Beer building

The city has rerouted a section of the Astoria Riverwalk after the further collapse of Buoy Beer Co.’s waterfront building over the Columbia River.

City officials say the company has taken steps to remove the remaining building after it partially collapsed in June 2022. Additional work is scheduled to begin in January.

The city has temporarily closed the Riverwalk between Seventh and Eighth streets as a precautionary measure after more debris fell into the river. The trail has been rerouted to Astor Street.

David Kroening, the president and general manager of Buoy Beer, said a debris boom is in place, but that high tides are making containment difficult. He said the company is working with contractors to get a larger cleanup done as soon as possible.

“Our team has been doing our best to remove debris as we’re able to, and we very much appreciate the help from the community,” Kroening said in an email.

The city said federal and state agencies have been contacted to address any environmental concerns and potential conflicts with watercraft.

“The city is working with the owner of Buoy Beer to develop a plan to continue work and safely reopen the Riverwalk once the necessary equipment becomes available,” the city said in a statement.

The waterfront building housed a restaurant that Buoy Beer closed in 2021. When the pilings under the building gave way in June 2022, no one was in the building and no injuries were reported.

Buoy Beer reopened the restaurant in the Astoria Food Hub off Marine Drive.

Kroening did not provide any additional information about the company’s plans and next steps for the waterfront property, but said he would share information as the company is able.
