While on a nightly dog walk with neighbors, we noticed an elderly neighbor left his garage door open, with lights on in his garage and home. In 10 years of walking past, this was irregular. We stopped and rang the doorbell, but there was no response.

We became quite concerned for our neighbor’s safety and called the police nonemergency number, 503-325-4411, for a wellness check. Within minutes, two officers met us at the premises. They were very professional, courteous and expressed concern for our neighbor. They told us they would investigate and follow up with us later.

This story has a happy ending. They reported that the neighbor was visiting his neighbor. The best part of the evening’s events was the reassurance that in Astoria we have professional, friendly and caring officers.

We are lucky to have these professionals patrolling our streets and ensuring our safety. I salute you.
