PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Seaside baseball team spent a nice week in the sun, having fun and playing a little ball, as the Gulls spent their spring break in Arizona.

Seaside took part in the “Coach Bob Invitational,” an annual tournament named after former coach Bob Weinheimer, a one-time St. Louis Brown who coached professionally and at the high school levels in New York, Ohio, Arizona and Colorado.

The Gulls flew into Phoenix Monday, and arrived back home Saturday. The tournament was held in and around ballparks in Phoenix, and attracted more than 100 high school teams from all over the country, from Virginia to Oregon.

“It was a great experience,” said Seaside coach Joel Dierickx. “There was plenty of time to play a little, we saw a couple Major League spring training games … it was a wonderful experience.”

Competing in the “Open” division, Seaside played four games total — the Gulls lost the first three, then capped the week with a win Thursday.

Pueblo Central (of Colorado) defeated Seaside 12-2 Tuesday, and the Gulls lost games to Palmer, Colo. (11-1) and Wheat Ridge, Colo. (13-0) Wednesday at Tolleson Union High School in west Phoenix.

After a day off, the Gulls came back and capped their tournament with a 16-5 win over Agua Fria (Ariz.), at Agua Fria High School.

Dylan Wallis was 4-for-6, with two runs scored and two RBI’s, while Brent Walsh was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs.

Dawson Blanchard had two hits, and Otto Hoekstre added a double and two RBI’s.

“We had lots of singles, and Payton Westerholm played a stellar shortstop in that game,” Dierickx said. “I can’t say enough about him, stepping up as a freshman and playing at a high level.”

Walsh pitched into the seventh inning, and had three strikeouts.

“We played really good defense,” Dierickx said. “Together as a group, we played real solid behind him, defensively, and he pitched well.”
