- Astoria cross country coaches Josh Fry, left, and Gael Marin, right, stand with Astoria runner Bryce Nurding, who finished sixth out of 104 runners in the Class 4A boys state championship race Saturday at Lane Community College.
Astoria senior Kyra Grafton and junior teammate Chloee Hunt were both named to the Cowapa All-League volleyball team, as voted on by the coaches and announced last week.
In Saturday’s state playoff loss at Marshfield, Hunt led Astoria with 10 kills, to go with 2.5 blocks, three aces and 15 digs. Grafton added nine kills and two blocks.
Senior Kaneah Owen finished with four kills and no errors on six attacks (.667 hitting percentage), and senior Miranda Dietrichs led the Lady Fish with 17 digs and three aces.
Jacqueline Jarrett had a solid night with nine kills and three blocks.
“The team played hard and fought until the last whistle,” said Astoria coach Angee Hunt. “We played some of the best volleyball we have played all season and our seniors (Dietrichs, Grafton, Owen) left it all on the floor in their final match. We controlled what we could control against a competitive team. It would have been interesting if we would have had the opportunity to push the match to a fifth game.”
Seaside senior Kelly Willyard was the lone Seagull on the all-league first team, while seniors Haylee Dundas and Danielle Willyard were named honorable mention, along with Astoria junior Ally Bentley and Dietrichs.
Junior Megan Bunn of Banks was selected as the league’s Player of the Year; Banks’ co-coaches Suzanne Alley and Diana Herb were Coaches of the Year; and the Braves landed five players on the first team and two players on the honorable mention list.
