John Erling Hurd, born Nov. 25, 1954, at Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane, Wash., died Dec. 6, 2014, in Cottage Grove, Ore., at the age of 60. John died peacefully in his sleep.

An avid outdoorsman, John loved the local woods and rivers. In recent years he was happiest being with his daughter Randi, her children, and Debby Dahlen — past wife and lifetime cribbage buddy.

Those who would like to remember John are invited to take a thoughtful walk outdoors. A private memorial will ensue. According to his wishes John’s ashes will be spread atop Granny’s Hill on the family homestead, where John learned his love of nature.

John was preceded in death by his sister, Merry Marshall, and two brothers, Richard and Michael Hurd.

Survivors include his mother, Polly Buell; a brother, Tim Hurd, and a sister, Kari Cederberg; two daughters, Randi Ross and Jessica Manes; five granddaughters and one grandson; multiple nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Max.
