Pier 39s Coffee Girl, which has been for sale seemingly forever but still in operation, has finally found two new owners in Betsy Wentworth and David Levinson.

I worked at the Ship Inn for 25 years, but the arthritis was getting pretty bad in my hands, said Wentworth. I had to create a job for myself.

Four years ago, her partner Levinson, a Washington-licensed architect, moved from Olympia to Astoria to be nearer to his partner. Although he cant do jobs in Oregon yet, Levinson said he thought his eye for design would help Coffee Girl, which on the riverfront side of the historic Hanthorn Cannery refurbished by Floyd Holcom, offers panoramic views of the Columbia River, passing ships and the Washington coastline.

After a mere three days of being closed, while they repainted, rearranged and reintroduced some of the historic photos of coffee being served to cannery workers, Coffee Girl reopened June 2, just in time for the Tenor Guitar Gathering to take up residence.

Wentworth brought in an instructor from the American Barista and Coffee School to train Coffee Girls employees on proper cleaning and creation of coffee drinks. Wentworth herself inherited and learned the baking menu from the previous owner, Debi Blissett. Coffee Girl was originally opened about nine years ago by Zetty Nemlowill, who now works for the Astoria Co-op Grocery.

Were trying to use as many fresh berries in as much as we can, said Wentworth, adding that shes mostly keeping the old bakery menu, except with a few twists.

Coffee Girl is adding bacon maple and other savory scones and daily quiche, similar to Three Cups Coffee House in Uniontown.

Coffee Girl opens from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, until 4 p.m. Fridays and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
