Patrick Arthur Thomas Charles Hope was born on April 28, 1947, in Astoria, Ore., the second son of John Conlin and Sybil “Bobbie” Roman Hope. His birth was followed by the rest of his fan club: six sisters. On Monday, Oct. 13, Patrick died from injuries suffered in a single motorcycle accident. He was 67.
Patrick attended St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic School and Astoria High School. Always musically inclined, Patrick got involved in the school band: thus began his love of the drum and bugle corps.
Patrick proudly served his military service in the United States Marine Corps, signing on for two tours in Vietnam 1966-1969. He exhibited exemplary and distinguished service, receiving two Purple Hearts, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Rifle Expert Badge and two Good Conduct Medals, and was honorably discharged.
Patrick settled in the Portland area where he put his charismatic charms to work in the hotel and hospitality industry, beginning at The Cosmopolitan Hotel, The Thunderbird at Jantzen Beach and The Benson Hotel.
Patrick met the lovely Jodie Jane Jacobsen while they were working at The Cosmo. He was completely smitten, and they married in 1970. They had two beautiful daughters, Tamara and Jennifer. Patrick and Jodie were divorced in 1978. Patrick married Annette Sesock, and they had four wonderful children: Chelsea, Patrick James, Sydney and Victoria, and stepson Jeremy Breazeale.
Patrick fortuitously entered the grocery business, beginning with Fred Meyer, eventually landing at Frito Lay in 1975. His career spanned 27 years with Frito Lay, retiring in May 2012. Patrick covered sales, marketing and management. He was a loyal co-worker and a leader as well as a well-regarded friend, boss and mentor.
Patrick had many loves as hobbies: he was an avid golfer, reserving tee times at golf courses all over the United States — he loved Hawaiian courses and Bandon Dunes — and worked incessantly at lowering his handicap. He loved talking his game as much as playing a round.
He loved the Marine Corps and was, as stated, proud of his service. He surrounded himself with Vietnam veterans, including his motorcycle clubs In Country and Dogs of War. Patrick loved his motorcycle and loved touring the countryside with Jodie, and any adventurous friend who wanted to share the freedom of the open road. It cannot be stressed more fully that he loved his time on his bike. Patrick was also devoted to the American Legion Post 12 Astoria, Oregon.
In 2008, Patrick and Jodie rekindled their love affair, and Patrick remarried the love of his life in 2009 in front of the overwhelming and loving approval of family, friends and grandkids. To say it was a glorious event would be understating. Their union brought so much happiness to all who knew them.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Jodie; children Tamara (Darren) Riordan, Jennifer (Colby) Bennett, Chelsea Hope (boyfriend Caleb Enk), Patrick James, Sydney, Victoria and stepson Jeremy Breazeale; grandchildren Olivia, Lillian, Breanna, Andrew, Sophia, Saida, and Grayson “Bubba Boy”; brother Michael; sisters Peggy (Walt) Lindquist, Sally (Richard) Grant, ShawnAnn Hope, Merry Carol Hope, Molly (Jeff) Elder, and Hilary (John) Jurgensen; Aunt Ruth Hope; and so many cousins, nieces and nephews. His black Labrador, Sequoia, waits for him at the door.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Patrick’s secret weapon: that smile that could light up a room. He used it on everyone, and added that wonderful laugh that could lighten your load and change your day for the better. Both are unforgettable. You can honor him by remembering his bodacious Irish spirit and his zest for life. He was one of the good ones.
Patrick’s family would be honored to have contributions made to Veterans of Foreign Wars USA (VFWs); Wounded Warrior Project; or American Legion Post 12, Astoria, Oregon.
