Relay team swims to second place in state

- <p>Seaside High School junior Dylan Townsend, senior Sonny Davis, senior Christian Anderson and senior Max Beoudoin took second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay in the Oregon State Activities Association state championship. They came in just 3/100th of a second behind Newport.</p>
Seasides 200-yard freestyle boys relay team entered the state meet as the top seed in their event, and swam the best time in preliminaries Feb. 21.
But in the final Feb. 22, it was Newport that edged the Gulls at the wall to win the event, with Seaside second.
The Gulls still scored a total of 14 points to finish seventh in the final team standings of the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state meet, held at Mt. Hood Aquatics Center.
Cottage Grove won the boys team championship with 52 points, with Newport second (47). St. Marys was the girls team champion with 48 points, followed closely by North Bend (46).
The Astoria and Seaside swim teams had plenty of entrants in the meet, but only two Seaside relay teams advanced to the finals.
Seasides 200 freestyle relay foursome of Max Beaudoin, Sonny Davis, Christian Anderson and Dylan Townsend won districts with a school record 1:33.57, then swam a 1:32.65 for the best time in the prelims. In the final, however, it was second-seeded Newport that posted a 1:32.46, edging Seasides school record 1:32.49.
In the last event of the finals, Seasides 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Anderson, Townsend, Sam Beaudoin and Davis (seeded sixth entering the meet), swam a 3:35.25 to finish fifth.
Seasides Christian Anderson (seeded ninth) finished seventh in the boys 100 butterfly preliminary (57.85).
