The quilting group at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Seaside needs fabric donations to continue with their ongoing quilt project.

SEASIDE — Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Seaside needs fabric donations to help with the ongoing quilting project. A group of six to eight women meet weekly to tie and sew quilts which are sent to countries overseas and around the U.S to disaster and oppressed areas.

The quilts are collected and shipped twice a year through Lutheran World Relief and serve as warmth, comfort and often a dwelling to suffering people. This organization supplies medical supplies and training, food, social and environmental support systems – such as digging wells, providing water filtration systems, setting up cottage industries and sanitation – and various other missions.

Donations of clean cotton or cotton/polyester fabric in 1/2 yard or larger pieces are needed for the quilts. For information, or to donate, call Claudia Kulland at 503-738-5895.

Fifth Sunday Hymn Sing

The First United Methodist Church, 1076 Franklin Ave., holds a Fifth Sunday Hymn Sing at 11 a.m. Sunday, which replaces the regular service. Everyone is welcome to come and sing hymns. The church is handicap accessible and large print bulletins are available. Coffee and refreshments are served after the worship service.

The last of summer Vespers

OYSTERVILLE, Wash. — The final Vespers program of summer – an informal combination of both a short devotional and musical programs – takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Oysterville Church, 33590 Territory Road.

Barbara Poulshock & Friends are scheduled to perform, Barbara Bate is the guest minister, and Sandy Nielson plays the organ for hymn singing. Teresa Goodwin and her father, Dobby Wiegardt, perform a duet, and Goodwin sings several solos with Poulshock accompanying.

A group of seven women, members of Poulshock’s chorus, the Bayside Singers, continued singing during the summer and have taken the name “Summer Singers” for the Vespers concert. Their part of the concert includes songs from Eastern Europe, lullabies of varying origin and several jazz pieces. Christl Mack, Rita Smith and Sandy Nielson are featured as soloists.

Diane Buttrell is the speaker for an Oysterville Moment, which highlights some aspect of the area’s history. The offering goes toward supporting the ongoing maintenance of the church, which dates back to 1892.

Old-Time Hymn Sing-a-long

WARRENTON — The Warrenton United Methodist Church, 679 S. Main Ave., holds a worship service and Old-Time Hymn Sing-a-long at 10 a.m. Sunday. All are welcome.

The doors open at 9:30 a.m. Those who play a portable musical instrument are welcome to bring it and join in the “joyful noise.”

Blessing of the backpacks

There is a single 9 a.m. service Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 Franklin Ave. Children are encouraged to bring their school backpacks to receive a special blessing during this service. All who are attending are asked to bring donations of school supplies to benefit families who come to the Grace Food Pantry. 

Grace Episcopal Preschool classes begin on Sept. 2.  There are limited openings in the morning classes, which are held daily from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and are taught by Denise Allen and Denise Raihala.

The art hanging in the Parish Hall this month is by local artist, Patty Davis. Her watercolor paintings will be on exhibit through September.

Jizo Bon Festival

CLATSKANIE — The Great Vow Zen Monastery, located at 79640 Quincy-Mayger Road in Clatskanie, is holding a Jizo Bon Festival from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday.    

This special festival includes painting lanterns, Obon dancing, a play, and an informal dinner. The evening also includes a Ksitigarbha ceremony and a lantern procession through the Jizo garden. All are welcome, especially families with children.

First Lutheran has Blues Mass

First Lutheran Church, 725 33rd St., is altering its worship time to one 10:30 a.m. service this weekend in honor of Unity Sunday. This fifth Sunday of the month event will also include the Blues Mass as the liturgy. The Sacrament of Holy Baptism will also be celebrated.
