New radio station airs on North Coast today

A new radio station was set to go on the air at 10 a.m. this morning.
Licensed as KCPB 90.9FM Warrenton, this low-power FM service will originate from the Coast Community Radio studios inside Tillicum House in Astoria. The transmitter is co-located with KMUN-FM’s antenna on Megler Mountain, just across the bridge from Astoria in Pacific County, Wash. Tillicum Foundation, the nonprofit membership corporation that operates KMUN-FM Astoria and KTCB-FM Tillamook, will own and operate this new station as well.
Serving the communities clustered on the Pacific coast around the mouth of the Columbia River, KCPB will provide a blend of National Public Radio, Public Radio International, BBC, and other independently produced, syndicated, noncommercial programming, according to Dave Hammock, general manager of KMUN, KTCB and now, KCPB.
Like the other stations operated by Tillicum Foundation as Coast Community Radio, KCPB will be listener-supported and rely on community members enjoying the service to provide operating funds through donations and memberships.
KCPB is licensed at a low level of power, so a clear signal is expected only in communities with a line of sight to the station’s Megler Mountain transmitter site. Listeners outside of Astoria, Warrenton, and Ilwaco and Long Beach, Wash., may require a radio with an external antenna to pull in the station, and the signal will be blocked by mountains, hills or large concrete or metal structures.
The program schedule for KCPB is published in The Current, Tillicum Foundation’s quarterly program guide and newsletter. More information about programming on KCPB or about membership in Tillicum Foundation or about underwriting on KCPB and/or KMUN and KTCB is available at Tillicum House, 14th and Exchange streets in Astoria, or by calling (503) 325-0010 during business hours.
