A head-on crash at 3:38 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on West Marine Drive at Denver Street injured Robert G. Slabinski, 43, of Astoria, according to Astoria police.

According to Astoria Fire Marshal Mike Jackson, one driver, later identified by Astoria police as Slabinski, apparently fell asleep as he drove his Chrysler west on West Marine Drive and crashed head-on into a Ford pickup waiting in the left-turn lane in front of Dairy Queen, 843 W. Marine Drive. Slabinski was transported by Medix Ambulance. No details of his condition or location were available this morning. The other driver, Joshua E. Kent, 26, of Astoria, was not seriously injured. Jackson said a large quantity of coolant and transmission fluid leaked from the vehicles, causing that portion of West Marine Drive to be closed in both directions for about 45 minutes while the spill was cleaned up. Astoria Public Works and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted with the cleanup.
