Members of the Knappa girls basketball team, seen here posing with the Northwest League title trophy, have won honors from the league.

The Knappa girls basketball team started its postseason run Saturday with a victory over Clatskanie, 42-28, in the 2A Northwest League championship game at Vernonia.

For their efforts, the Loggers earned a state playoff game against 10th-seeded Heppner at 5 p.m. Friday. The seventh-seeded Loggers will be seeking to avenge a Dec. 27 loss to the Mustangs. The winner earns a quarterfinal berth on March 6 in Pendleton.

Knappa boys hit the road

Knappa boys basketball fell to Portland Christian 74-23 Saturday in the 2A Northwest League championship game in Vernonia.

With both Parker Stevens and Travis Tadei sidelined due to injuries, the Loggers struggled to contain Portland Christian’s size advantage.

Despite the loss, the Loggers qualified for the state tournament. Knappa will open its quest for Pendleton as the 11th seed and will make a long drive to Umatilla County for a Saturday game against Stanfield High School. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Warrenton boys get play-in game

The Warrenton boys basketball team will travel to Scio for a Wednesday play-in game for the 3A state tournament. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

The Warriors enter Wednesday’s game as the No. 18 seed; Scio is No. 15. Warrenton enters the game with a 15-11 record, while Scio comes in at 18-7. Whichever team wins that game will go on to face the No. 2 seed, the Billies of Pleasant Hill.

Astoria girls on doorstep

After beating Scappoose 53-42 on Friday, the Astoria girls basketball team is one win away from winning another Cowapa League regular season title.

Eight players scored for the Fishermen in Friday’s win. Malory Dundas was the leading scorer with 15 and was joined in double figures by Kyah Gohr, who had 11. Kate Barendse contributed seven points, Roberta Chavez had six and Emery Young added five.

The Fishermen wrap up their league season at home with a Tuesday game against St. Helens. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. It’s also senior night for Astoria, and Dundas and injured senior Shelby Bruney will be honored for their four years with the program.

A win for the Fishermen would give them a 7-2 record in league play, the same mark as Seaside, but Astoria won two out of three games against the Seagulls this season.

The Fishermen boys team (2-9 in league play, 4-18 overall) has one game remaining in its season, a Tuesday game at home against St. Helens. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Seaside girls wrap up season

A 7-2 record in the Cowapa League was an improvement over last season, but it might be one game short for the Seaside girls basketball team.

Despite taking care of St. Helens on Friday, 54-48, the Seagulls need Astoria to lose to St. Helens Tuesday to win the Cowapa regular season title. With a 13-8 record and No. 11 ranking, the Seagulls seem assured to earn a spot in the 4A state tournament, but will wait to see if they’ll get a home playoff game or will have to go on the road.

Seaside boys on the verge

A Tuesday game at Tillamook is the only thing standing in the way of a Cowapa League regular season title for the Seaside boys. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.

The Seagulls have won 11 straight games, including a 60-52 victory over St. Helens on Friday. The Seagulls are 10-1 in league play, with a one-game lead over Scappoose. But the Seagulls won both games against Scappoose this season, so they have a tiebreaker over the Indians.
